Casa Hogar Alfa y Omega Orphanage to Open Christian School in Fall 2005
A dream is coming true for Elias and Teresa Herrera in Poza Rica, Vera Cruz, Mexico. What started as a ministry to children who were abandoned and living under a bridge, nearly 13 years ago, has developed into a full time ministry to hurting children. Abandoned, abused, neglected, the children now have security and peace in the midst of their struggling lives.
It is amazing indeed to see what has happened! Property was purchased for the cost of $6,000.00 (USD) on a hillside outside of town. With the generosity of God’s people, the property has been developed into a Church of God orphanage and houses about 75 children and adult workers. Two dormitories have been built, along with a bath house, a director’s home, and most recently an educational building. Pastor Elias now estimates the value of the property at 1.5 million dollars (USD).
Dedicated last year, the educational building was intended to house a school for the children in the orphanage at the present time, and for children in the community in the future. They have anticipated the opening of the school for some time and have waited on God’s timing.
With the assistance of the ’05 STEP teams from the International Department of Youth and Christian Education, along with a team from West Little York Church of God in Houston, Texas (Pastor Emory Thompson), the dream for a school is becoming a reality this year. Student offices and scoring stations have been built.
They will be using the A.C.E. School of Tomorrow curriculum, which is available for elementary grade levels in Spanish. An individualized curriculum, the students will benefit from working at their own level at their own pace. Students offices have been built, scoring stations are being prepared and testing tables are in place. Four Learning Center classrooms will open this fall, three for elementary students and one for kindergarten. The workers in the orphanage have been trained in the A.C.E. program and are excited about the opportunity.
Vision and faith have resulted in this wonderful opportunity. It is truly amazing what can be done when individuals choose to accept the challenge and walk by faith towards the vision God has given!
Monthly sponsorship of the children is available, as well as the opportunity to assist with the purchase of the curriculum, which cost approximately $100.00 per year, per student. The YCE Department will be sponsoring two trips to the orphanage in 2006, in January and June. For further information, contact Tony Lane at 423-478-7229 or at ycessce@extremegen.org. This ministry is under the covering of Church of God World Missions, project number 7150130.
